A man of Greek origin from the Caucasus, photographed in a camp at Salonica, has knotted a scarf over his head in place of a hat, a practical makeshift that hints at how little displaced travelers could carry. The picture dates to about 1923, when the Greco-Turkish War and the population exchange that followed the Treaty of Lausanne sent large numbers of Greeks from Asia Minor, the Black Sea region and the Caucasus into the port city's temporary camps. The print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by a husband-and-wife team of travel writers who covered much of the world for American readers.
