Its title, "Knock'd into a cock'd hat," is an old phrase for beating someone thoroughly, and this lithograph applies it to the 1848 presidential race between Whig Zachary Taylor and Democrat Lewis Cass. Nathaniel Currier issued the print under the imprint of Peter Smith at 2 Spruce Street in New York, and it was deposited for copyright on July 10, 1848. The record also ties it to Philadelphia, where the Whigs had met that June to nominate Taylor, a Mexican War general. Taylor won the election that fall, so the cartoon's boast reads now as a prediction that came true.
