Harriet Quimby sits in the cockpit of an early airplane in this 1911 portrait, one of the rare images of a woman pilot posed at the controls in that era. Quimby had earned her aviator's license in 1911, becoming the first woman in the United States to do so, and she was a journalist and drama critic before she took up flying. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs that documents the early years of aviation as it moved from novelty toward public spectacle. Quimby died in a flying accident in 1912, so the photograph captures her at the start of a career that was still taking shape.
