Harriet Quimby, the aviator shown here, was photographed around 1911, the year she became the first woman in the United States to earn a pilot's license from the Aero Club of America. Her name appears in the Bain News Service collection, a large body of newspaper photographs that documents early twentieth-century news. Quimby later became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel in 1912, and she died that same year in a crash at a Boston-area air meet. The portrait captures her at the start of a career that drew wide press attention to women in flight.
