This print commemorates the execution of Felice Orsini and Giuseppe Pieri, who were guillotined in Paris on March 13, 1858, for their part in the attack on Napoleon III's carriage the previous January. The French title dedicates the sheet to the "martyrs of liberty," which shows that it was meant to honor the two men as patriots rather than criminals, a view widely held among Italian nationalists of the time. The attack killed and wounded bystanders and led to diplomatic friction between France and Britain over the refuge given to political exiles.
