Napoleon III's surrender to the Prussian king at Sedan on September 2, 1870, is the event this lithograph commemorates. Published in New York around 1871 by H. Schile, the print carries its title in both English and German, reflecting the German-speaking readers it was meant to reach. The capture of the emperor and about 100,000 French troops led within days to the fall of the Second Empire and the proclamation of a republic in Paris. The Library of Congress holds both a black-and-white and a hand-colored impression.
