Dr. Von Eisenberg's aesthetico-neuralgicon is an odd, invented-sounding contraption, and its name alone suggests a joke aimed at the pseudo-scientific gadgets and nerve cures that crowded the market in the mid-nineteenth century. The wood engraving was published in Harper's Weekly in 1864, when that magazine was one of the country's most widely read illustrated newsweeklies and often used satirical images to comment on public life during the Civil War. Because the record is based on an old caption card and has not been fully verified, the exact target of the satire is best read from the drawing itself, where the machine's dense mechanical detail is worth a close look.
