A forge, a horseshoe on the anvil, and a smith at work: the record gives little beyond a c1897 date and a single photographic print, so the picture's specifics have to come from its era. Around the late 1890s, blacksmiths were still a common presence in American towns and rural crossroads, shoeing horses, repairing wagon wheels and tools, and serving as a gathering point for local news. Photographers of the period often staged such scenes to celebrate traditional trades that were already giving way to factories and machine-made goods. Look closely at the tools hanging on the wall and the worn surface of the anvil, which show the everyday labor behind the romantic title.
