The title, *Held up the wrong man*, sets up the joke before the viewer reaches the drawing: someone has been seized for a crime he did not commit. The line cut was made by William Allen Rogers, a longtime cartoonist for *Harper's Weekly*, and it appeared in the magazine's November 21, 1903, issue. Line cuts were engraved blocks that let magazines and newspapers reproduce drawn commentary in print, so this image was meant for a wide readership. The early description comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, so details of the scene should be checked against the magazine itself.
