A man works a cutting machine to punch out stars from cloth, the kind of step that let flagmakers turn out large numbers of flags more quickly than hand cutting allowed. The image is dated only to the 1900s, and its title and details come from an old caption card that has not been independently verified. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news and feature photographs made largely in New York in the early twentieth century. Pictures like this one, showing everyday manufacturing, record how patriotic goods were made in a period of rapid industrial growth.
