A man in blackface makeup, costumed as a minstrel performer, poses for this portrait made sometime between about 1890 and 1910. Minstrel shows, built on exaggerated and demeaning caricatures of Black Americans, were among the most popular forms of stage entertainment in the United States in the late 1800s and remained widely performed into the early twentieth century. Frances Benjamin Johnston, whose collection holds the print, was a prominent American photographer working in those decades, and her archive documents many aspects of the period's social and theatrical life. Today the image is best viewed critically, as a record of how racist stereotypes were staged and circulated.
