Dated April 6, 1865, this small pencil sketch on tan paper records the day Confederate forces under Richard S. Ewell were overtaken at Sayler's Creek in Virginia, a fight that effectively ended his corps. Union troops cut off the retreating column, and Ewell was among the officers forced to surrender with a large part of his command. The drawing's title, "The last of Ewell's corps," and its details of flags, carts, wagons, and prisoners capture the disorder of that retreat in the final days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Quick field sketches like this one were often used as source material for illustrated newspapers, so they gave many readers their first visual sense of the collapse.
