Mary Todd Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman appear alongside Abraham Lincoln in this hand-colored lithograph, which presents itself as his last public reception in Washington. The company gathered in the picture reflects the Union's political and military leadership as the Civil War was ending. Published in Philadelphia by John Smith in 1865, the year Lincoln was assassinated that April, the print carries the weight of hindsight, and the hand coloring was a common finishing touch on lithographs of the period. It is worth noticing how the scene turns an ordinary social occasion into a record of a presidency cut short.
