Lincoln sat for this portrait in Danville, Illinois, on May 27, 1857, while he was working the Eighth Judicial Circuit as a traveling lawyer. The original image is an ambrotype, a glass-plate process that was popular in the 1850s, and it survives today at the Illinois State Historical Library. The version shown here is a gelatin silver print made later from that original, one of several copies that circulated after Frederick Hill Meserve and Lloyd Ostendorf cataloged Lincoln's photographs. Its value lies in showing the lawyer on the road, a working life spent in courthouse towns long before he became president.
