In this dime caricature, number four in Thomas W. Strong's series, Abraham Lincoln is cast as a schoolmaster, and the title "The schoolmaster abroad" at last" makes the joke explicit. The subjects it names, including the secession movements in Louisiana and South Carolina, the Alabama and Mississippi flags, and Lincoln himself, tie the picture to the winter of 1860-61, when Southern states began leaving the Union after his election. Probably drawn by John H. Goater, the wood engraving shows how Northern printmakers used cheap, widely sold satire to comment on the crisis as it unfolded.
