Few images of the Crimean War show a city burning as dramatically as this one, which focuses on the conflagration of Sevastopol. The Russian garrison abandoned the port in September 1855, after an eleven-month siege by British, French, and Ottoman forces, and fires consumed much of the town as it was evacuated. The print dates to 1886, roughly three decades after the fighting, so it reflects how the war was remembered rather than how it was first reported. Its title also promises the "last great battles and victories," so it likely compresses the closing campaign into a single scene. The record's attribution to a J. H. Jocelyn comes from an unverified shelflist card.
