Col. John C. Frémont is named in the title as the leader of one more exploring expedition, a nod to the western surveys that had earned him the nickname "Pathfinder" in the 1840s. By 1856 he was the Republican Party's first presidential nominee, and Nathaniel Currier's shop issued this lithograph during that campaign, using the language of exploration to comment on his candidacy. Frémont lost to James Buchanan that November, and the print shows how the national fight over slavery in the territories was argued in inexpensive popular prints as well as in newspapers and speeches.
