A hand-colored lithograph of a Free Soil campaign banner, published by Nathaniel Currier from his Nassau Street shop in New York around 1848, is the subject here. That was the year the Free Soil Party took shape to oppose extending slavery into the western territories, and its slogans of free soil, free speech and free men were common in campaign displays. Currier, who later partnered with James Ives to produce a large body of popular prints, was then a young publisher building his trade in inexpensive pictures for a wide public. The record also credits daguerreotypes by John Plumbe, a reminder that many printed images of the period drew on photographic sources.
