Few images from the 1870s capture the spectacle of tethered flight as directly as this one. It shows the large captive balloon built by Henry Giffard, the French engineer known for his work on airships and steam power, which was winched up and down on a cable so that passengers could look out over the surrounding city. Giffard's balloon drew crowds at the Paris Exposition of 1878, when many visitors saw aerial views for the first time. The print comes from the Tissandier Collection, named for Gaston Tissandier, a balloonist and writer who recorded the early history of flight. The record is based on an old caption card, so some details remain unconfirmed.
