This lithograph shows the deathbed of Henry Clay, the Kentucky statesman, and its caption records his words, "My son I am going, sit by me." Clay died in Washington on June 29, 1852, after a long illness, while serving in the Senate. He had been one of the most prominent American politicians of his day, known as "the Great Compromiser" for his role in the sectional deals of the 1820s and 1850, and he had made three unsuccessful runs for the presidency. Nathaniel Currier issued the print in New York that year, part of a wave of memorial images that met public demand for keepsakes of the senator.
