Son of Temperance" takes its name from the Sons of Temperance, a fraternal order founded in New York in 1842 that bound its members to abstain from alcohol and support one another. Nathaniel Currier published this hand-colored lithograph around 1848, when the temperance movement was gaining wide popularity and supporters wanted images to display at home and at lodge meetings. Currier's firm issued many such prints during the 1840s, turning organizational causes into affordable, colorful pictures for a broad public. The title and the movement behind it are the best guides to the print's purpose.
