Nathaniel Currier's firm issued a long run of temperance prints in the decades before the Civil War, and this one pairs the Bible directly with the cause in its title. The movement gained strength through groups such as the American Temperance Society, founded in 1826, and the pledge campaigns of the 1840s. Prints like this were meant to be displayed and discussed in parlors, churches and reform meetings, where scripture was often presented as the foundation of sober living. The hand coloring, applied by workers after the lithograph was printed, was typical of Currier's output from this period.
