Published in New York by J.B. Allen around 1848, this hand-colored lithograph takes its title from the temperance cause, which was gaining strength across the country in the 1840s. The Washingtonian movement, begun among reformed drinkers in Baltimore in 1840, brought large public meetings, pledges of abstinence, and a steady stream of cheap prints urging people to give up liquor. Temperance images of this period often set the rewards of a sober life against the ruin that drink was thought to bring to families, and because the color was applied by hand, no two copies of such a print were exactly alike.
