Third in a sequence, this lithograph marks the point where the story turns back toward drink, the "relapse" of its title. Nathaniel Currier published it in New York around 1841, a time when the temperance movement was gaining strength, helped by the Washingtonian pledge movement, which drew former drinkers into public meetings and testimonials. Cautionary series like this one sold well to a broad middle-class audience and were meant to be read in order, each plate showing another step toward ruin. Its moral lesson comes through the sequence as much as through any single image.
