The fifth plate in Nathaniel Currier's series *The Progress of Intemperance* turns to an expectant wife, using her vulnerable position to show what a husband's drinking costs a household. Currier issued the lithograph in New York around 1841, when the Washingtonian movement, which began in Baltimore in 1840, had drawn large crowds of reformed drinkers and made temperance a popular cause. Inexpensive lithographs like this one carried the temperance message into parlors and kitchens that might never have heard a lecture.
