Whistler's etching shows a coastline rendered with the fine, controlled line of a survey chart, and its title points to his short time at the United States Coast Survey office in Washington in 1854. He had been hired there as a draftsman and engraver, learning to work copper plates for charts, and the job taught him a precision he later carried into his art. The plate is usually dated to 1855 or 1856, when he was already moving toward the painterly, tonal etchings for which he became known. Joseph and Elizabeth Robins Pennell's collection of Whistler material preserves it, giving researchers a useful record of how his early printmaking grew out of technical training.
