This plate presents two composite pictures, each assembled from many separate objects arranged into a single image. It was issued as an illustration for Delafosse's *Iconologie historique*, a French work of the eighteenth century that catalogued symbolic attributes and the allegorical meanings attached to them. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of this impression is unknown, but the plate belongs to a period when such emblem-filled images were used to teach viewers how to read symbols. Looking closely, the viewer can see how each object was chosen to carry a particular idea.
