Here the sea serpent is labeled Liberty, and the startled onlookers are marked L'Ancien Régime, or the old order. The caricature turns the upheavals of 1848 into a sea-monster sighting, the kind of tale people tell with a shudder and half disbelief. Its context is the French revolutionary year: the July Monarchy fell in February, the Second Republic followed, and conservatives across Europe watched with alarm. The record describes this version as a photograph of a wood engraving from a German publication, and notes that a reversed version of the design appeared in the Paris satirical paper Le Charivari in December 1848.
