Make way for liberty!" is a color lithograph issued as card No. 66 in a series titled "The slave in 1863," published in Philadelphia that year under the copyright of William A. Stephens. The series appeared the same year the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, and as the Union began enlisting Black men into its armies, a shift the card's subject headings reflect in their focus on African American military service. Cards like this one, meant to be kept in albums, carried Civil War politics into middle-class homes and show how quickly emancipation and enlistment became subjects of popular print.
