Pope Leo XIII, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1878 until his death in 1903, is the figure at the center of this 1889 color lithograph, published in *Puck* on July 24. Its title, "The Pope's Dream: A Roman Catholic America," frames the scene as the pope's imagined vision of the United States under Catholic influence. Joseph Keppler, the Austrian-born cartoonist who founded *Puck* in 1876, produced many such satirical images for the magazine. This cartoon appeared during a period of growing nativist anxiety about immigration and Catholic power in American public life, so it is worth reading as commentary on those fears as much as on the pope himself.
