A pink-paper tobacco label from 1860 advertises "Young America" fine cut Cavendish and pairs the product name with an eagle and a display of flags. The copyright was registered in the name of C.H. Lilienthal, and the printing credit goes to Sarony, Major & Knapp, whose address at 449 Broadway places the job in New York's busy lithography trade. Labels like this were attached to tobacco packages sold in shops, so manufacturers often relied on national emblems to appeal to buyers on the eve of the Civil War. The design is a small, bright record of how everyday goods were marketed at that moment.
