Two boys, Pasquale Salvo and Sandy Castina, are shown at Shaft No. 6 of the Pennsylvania Coal Company in Pittston, with a mule in the scene, as the title's "young leader" and "driver" suggest. The January 1911 date places it in the years when the National Child Labor Committee was documenting young workers in the anthracite region, and the print is attributed to Lewis Hine on the basis of its provenance. Hine's photographs of boys at work in mines and mills were used to press for child labor reform, so the picture is worth studying for what it shows of daily labor in the pits.
