Few details survive beyond the caption card, which names an Indiana glass works and the workers gathered there in August 1908. The picture belongs to a series of glass factory views that Lewis Hine made that year for the National Child Labor Committee, which documented young laborers in American industry. Glass houses of the period often employed boys to carry hot ware between furnaces and annealing ovens, a job the series returns to repeatedly. No city is recorded, so the exact works remains unidentified, but the scene reflects Indiana's substantial glass industry in the years around 1900.
