Mamie La Barge is shown at her machine in a Winchendon, Massachusetts, mill in this September 1911 photograph, and the caption card identifies her as under the legal working age. Lewis Hine made many pictures like this for the National Child Labor Committee, which used them to push for laws keeping children out of factories. The attribution to Hine rests on the print's provenance rather than a signature, but the image fits his documentary focus on young workers and the machinery around them. It is a useful record of how children were employed in New England textile mills in the early twentieth century.
