Born Giacomo della Chiesa in Genoa in 1854, the man pictured took the name Benedict XV when he was elected pope in September 1914, only weeks after the First World War began. He spent much of his reign pressing the warring governments toward a negotiated peace, and in 1917 he condemned the fighting as a "useless slaughter." Dating to about 1915, the portrait comes from the early, uncertain years of that effort, when his neutrality was often criticized by all sides.
