The title is a direct nod to Rudyard Kipling's 1890 poem "Mandalay," whose refrain about the road to the old Burmese royal city drew many American readers to a place few of them had seen. This small etching, measuring just over six by ten centimeters, is pencil-signed and dated 1917, and its catalog entry links it to the Arms numbering. Mandalay had been under British control since the 1880s, and the city's old palace and royal associations gave it a romantic reputation in the West. Printmakers of the period often turned such distant places into quiet, intimate scenes of travel and memory.
