*Along the shore* is an etching by John Taylor Arms, an American printmaker known for his precise, controlled line. This impression is an artist's proof from the first state of the plate, signed and dated in pencil in 1920, so it was pulled for the artist's own review before the edition was made. Etching had a broad revival in the United States during the 1910s and 1920s, when many artists took up the medium for its fine line and tonal range. At about 17 by 12 centimeters, the plate is modest in scale, a size well suited to the detailed work etchers favored at the time.
