Eagle Falls, the upper cascade above Emerald Bay on the western shore of Lake Tahoe, is the subject here, a spot that drew sightseers to the Sierra Nevada during the 1860s. The picture is one half of a stereograph, the paired image that a stereoscope fused into a single view with apparent depth, and it belongs to a commercial series titled *Gems of California Scenery*. Only this one half survives in the collection, so the flat print lacks the three-dimensional effect its original viewers would have seen. The 1866 date comes from an old caption card and is not independently confirmed.
