Zephyr Cove, on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, is the vantage point here, with the distant Western Summit rising beyond the water. This half of a stereograph was published around 1866 as part of the "Gems of California Scenery" series, and the Library of Congress holds only this one card of the pair. Albumen prints like this were mounted on cards and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the lake and mountains a sense of depth. In the 1860s, Tahoe was drawing growing attention from travelers and photographers, and views like this one helped shape how the region was pictured for people far away. The catalog record's details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
