Zephyr Cove, on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, is the subject of this half of a stereograph pair. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images fused into a single scene with depth, a popular parlor pastime in the 1860s. It is catalogued as number 668 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, which brought views of the state's landscapes to a wide public. Lake Tahoe drew growing travel in those years as mining boomtowns in Nevada increased traffic through the region. The 1866 date comes from an unverified caption card and should be treated as provisional.
