Among the Rocks" frames a shoreline at Zephyr Cove on the eastern side of Lake Tahoe, with boulders in the foreground leading the eye out over the water. The print is one half of a stereograph, a paired image meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect, and the Library holds only one of the two. It dates from the 1860s, when the lake was drawing travelers from the nearby Comstock silver mines and San Francisco, and mounted scenic views like this carried images of the Sierra landscape into parlors across the country. The caption card lists the series as Gems of California Scenery, no. 670, though those details are unverified.
