The Nick of the Woods, a spot in the Lake Tahoe valley, is the subject of this view, which the record gives as published in 1866. The Library holds only one half of the original stereograph pair, issued in the Gems of California Scenery series as number 644. Photographers working around Lake Tahoe in the mid-1860s were recording a region that was drawing more travelers over the Sierra after the Comstock silver boom. The record's details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
