The old tree that gives this view its title is set against the water of Fallen Leaf Lake, a smaller lake just south of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada. The Library holds only one half of the original stereographic pair, so the three-dimensional effect viewers once saw through a stereoscope is not preserved here. The albumen print dates to about 1866, when scenic California views were widely sold as cards for parlor viewers. The series number and other details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
