Fallen Leaf Lake, a small mountain lake south of Lake Tahoe, lies beneath the peak the caption calls Tahlac, better known today as Mount Tallac. The picture is only one half of a stereographic pair, two nearly identical views that a stereoscope fused into a single image with depth. It was published in 1866 as part of the Gems of California Scenery series, when Tahoe was drawing more visitors and albumen prints were the common medium for mass-produced scenic views. The caption data was recorded long ago and has not been fully verified, so the date and series details are best read as the publisher's own labeling.
