The title names two old settlers, and the catalog subject headings place them among the West's pioneer settlers and the aged. The record credits C.J. Hibbard as the photographer and notes that the picture was copyrighted, which suggests it was made for wide distribution rather than as a private family keepsake. Portraits of aging pioneers were popular in the years around 1918, as the generation that had homesteaded and farmed the frontier grew old and public interest in that past increased. The date and identifications come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the sitters' names and exact setting remain uncertain.
