The title alludes to Matthew 10:42, where a cup of cold water given to one of "these little ones" is promised a reward. Pictures built on that verse were popular in Sunday school materials and devotional prints, and the phrase also suited temperance and charity themes. The record credits American Lithographic Co., a commercial firm that produced large runs of color prints, but it gives no date, so the image's exact period and original use remain uncertain. Its subject and commercial origin still place it within a broader tradition of mass-circulated American moral imagery.
