This photograph shows a German aircraft readied for a flight over the Argonne, the wooded hill country of northeastern France, on December 22, 1914. The German caption, "Unsere erste Maschine," which means "our first machine," suggests the aircraft was the unit's lead plane for that mission. By late 1914 the war on the Western Front had settled into trench lines, and the Argonne was among the sectors where both sides fought for ground that was hard to see into from the surface. Aircraft of this period, built from wood, wire and fabric, were used mainly for reconnaissance and spotting artillery fire. The album it comes from belonged to Hermann Göring, who later led the Luftwaffe and had flown as a fighter pilot in the war.
