Few photographs show the inside of Naulakha, the house Rudyard Kipling built on a hillside outside Brattleboro, Vermont, in the early 1890s. Kipling took the name from a novel he had written with his brother-in-law, Wolcott Balestier, and this study is where he worked during the years he lived there, from 1893 to 1896. He wrote much of *The Jungle Book* in the house, and the caption's catalog tags, which point to library interiors, suggest how central books were to the room. The print is undated, but its 1890s estimate fits the period of his Vermont years.
