The record places Rudyard Kipling at a Young Men's Christian Association officers' hut in 1918, a wartime setting that sets this portrait apart from the other Kipling pictures on this board. The YMCA ran huts like this one for servicemen, offering a place to rest, write letters and get a hot meal away from the front or training camps. Kipling, already famous for *Kim* and *The Jungle Book*, had lost his son John at Loos in 1915, and by 1918 he was closely tied to the British and American war effort through writing and public appearances. The picture comes from the Carpenter Kipling Collection of family portraits, which gives it value for anyone studying how writers appeared in wartime.
