This stereograph shows a thatched-roof dwelling that its original caption calls a "coolie hut," a term from the 19th century for laborers, many of them Indian indentured workers brought to Jamaica after emancipation in 1834. Stereo cards like this one, published by M.H. Zahner with Griffith & Griffith, were popular with travelers and home viewers who wanted glimpses of tropical life. The card is undated, so its exact making is uncertain. Its focus on a humble home, rather than a grand building or street view, shows how these views sometimes recorded working-class housing alongside more picturesque scenes.
